Originally designed by Ronald Fream, Pinheiros Altos is located within the exclusive Quinta do Lago estate, and benefits from the prolific natural attractions of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. Bird life and exotic plants are in abundance as you play this golf course.

There are distinctly different halves at Pinheiros Altos, the first nine in an undulating, pine covered landscape, and the second in a contrasting lake-filled setting.

Accuracy is paramount on this championship golf course. This is amply emphasised on the opening hole. The first drive is straightforward to a wide landing area, but with a dogleg second shot to a green protected by tall pine trees. Already the player is aware of the intricacies, and subtle hazards presented by the golf course designer.

The par 3 second is 168 meters long and requires precision, since any wayward shot is heavily punished. It will be thrown away from the green if left, and bunkered front and right.

Hole number five at Pinheiros Altos has all the makings of becoming a world famous par 3. From a raised tee to an elevated green and with a carry of some 143 meters, it is an awesome hole. Wind, humidity and a valley filled with pines await you, as you arrive on a sloping green with a dominating pine tree looming over to the left corner.

On the second nine, hole number twelve, a par 5, requires a true ability and character. A positive drive to a narrowing fairway, with a lake to the left requires both precision and fearlessness. The second shot to a guarded entrance way very often results in humility. With water behind and to the left of the two-tiered green, the third shot played with a strong dose of accuracy and courage, rewards the golfer handsomely.

The short par 3 seventeenth seems an innocent shot over water, and on to a delightfully picturesque island green. This is really 'a wolf in sheep's clothing'. The green is sloped from back to front, and anything other than a solidly struck and well placed tee shot finds water or a bunker behind the green. Deservedly, Pinheiros Altos golf club has a strong following of golfers from all parts of Europe.
